POWER Engineers awarded contract for Urban Forestry Management at Philadelphia

from Power Engineers

POWER Engineers announced a contract awarded by the city of Philadelphia for the implementation of Cityworks for urban forestry management. In this multi-phased project, Cityworks will provide an expandable tool for both spatial management and decision-making regarding the urban forest as well as the tracking of costs and activities per tree asset. This initiative meets a strategic objective of the Parks and Recreation Dept. to “implement a national model for Natural Resource and Urban Forest Management.” As Mark Focht, First Deputy Commissioner for Parks and Recreation stated, “The department is looking forward to the benefits and efficiencies that implementing Cityworks can provide. A spatially based system that can provide real-time updates and keep staff in the field and not behind a desk is the most effective way to manage forestry assets. We’re also extremely pleased to be working with a firm such as POWER Engineers on this project, a firm with quality experience implementing Cityworks for urban forestry.”

POWER’s Senior Project Manager located in our Philadelphia office, Peter Godfrey stated, “This effort dates back to 1999 when the former Fairmount Park Commission recognized the need for a spatially based asset management system for the city’s street and park trees. Building on previously gathered information and earlier relationships established, we look forward to a truly collaborative effort between POWER, our partners on this project, and the City. We will be leveraging lessons learned and new technology to configure and deploy a system that will result in measurable operational and planning efficiencies, as well as be a model of established Urban Forestry best management practices benefitting the City and its residents.”

The initial phase of the project begins with an analysis of the business workflow and definition of the functional requirements for urban tree management that includes an estimated inventory of over 1.2 million Street and Park tree assets. POWER has teamed with Azteca Systems for Cityworks software; geographIT for sub-contracting services and Photo Science for inventory capture services. POWER, an Azteca Systems Platinum Business Partner with over 30 Cityworks clients, has deep experience in developing and implementing Cityworks solutions.

POWER’s team will provide the following services for the initial phase:
